Eégún Aláré

19712024 fifty-three years

Ògúnníran’s play follows Ọ̀jẹ́làdé, a performer in the alárìnjó travelling masquerade theatre, and the reckoning that follows what he does with his gift. It is one of the best-known works of modern Yorùbá drama and a set text in Nigerian secondary schools, and for years it was easier to find on a school syllabus than in a shop. This edition puts it within reach of Yorùbá readers and students outside Nigeria.

An African Abroad

19632022 fifty-nine years unavailable

In 1952 Àjàlá cycled 2,280 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. He went on to talk his way past Khrushchev's security cordon, to press Golda Meir on Palestine, and to meet Nasser, Nehru and the Shah. His 1963 memoir of that life vanished from print within the decade. This edition restores it, with a preface by Kọ́lá Túbọ̀sún and a new introduction by Joane Àjàlá, who edited the earliest draft of the manuscript.
